Empowering Future Leaders: ULK Gisenyi Hosts Anti-Corruption Awareness Campaign
On Friday, June 13, 2025, Kigali Independent University (ULK) Gisenyi Campus had the distinct honor of hosting a delegation of Senators from the African Parliamentarians’ Network Against Corruption (APNAC), a parliamentary forum dedicated to combating corruption across Africa. This visit was part of a nationwide outreach campaign aimed at sensitizing youth, particularly university students, about the dangers of corruption and their pivotal role in its eradication.
Addressing a hall filled with attentive students, Honorable Senator NGARAMBE Thelesphore, Chairperson of APNAC-Rwanda, delivered a powerful message:
“You are the future leaders of this country. The integrity of Rwanda depends on the choices you make today.”
His words resonated deeply, reinforcing a sense of civic responsibility and patriotism among the students.
Senator NGARAMBE provided an insightful overview of common forms of corruption, including:
- Bribery: Offering or receiving something of value in exchange for influence or action.
- Embezzlement: Misappropriation of funds entrusted to one’s care.
- Nepotism and Favoritism: Granting unfair advantages to relatives or friends.
- Fraud: Deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.
- Extortion: Obtaining something through force or threats.
- Abuse of Power: Using one’s position for personal gain.
He further elaborated on the causes and consequences of corruption and emphasized how young people can actively participate in promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance.
In his remarks, Mr. Haguminana Frank, Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics of ULK Gisenyi Campus, expressed gratitude for the senators’ visit and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to cultivating a generation of responsible, ethical, and corruption-free leaders.
The event concluded with a vibrant Q&A session, where students shared their perspectives and sought clarity on various governance issues. This interactive dialogue underscored the university’s role as a breeding ground for conscious and informed citizens.
